How to Score Bowling
Strike (X): Knocking down all 10 pins on the first roll. Score = 10 + the value of your next two rolls.
Spare (/): Knocking down all 10 pins using both rolls of a frame. Score = 10 + the value of your next roll.
Open Frame: Not knocking down all 10 pins in a frame. Score = total number of pins knocked down.
10th Frame: If you roll a strike or spare in the 10th frame, you get bonus roll(s) to complete the frame.
The Bowling Score Calculator is an interactive tool that simplifies tracking and calculating bowling scores for a 10-frame game. Users enter the number of pins knocked down per roll (0–10, with “X” for strikes) to see real-time updates for each frame’s rolls, scores, and cumulative total. The tool handles strikes, spares, open frames, and the special 10th frame rules, displaying strikes in red (“X”) and spares in blue (“/”).
- Input Rolls:
- Select pins knocked down (0–10 or “X” for 10) for the current roll in the current frame.
- Example: Frame 1, Roll 1 = 10 (strike); Frame 2, Roll 1 = 7, Roll 2 = 3 (spare).
- Validate Inputs:
- Ensure pins are valid (0–10 for first roll; 0 to remaining pins for second roll).
- 10th frame allows up to 3 rolls if strike or spare.
- Update Game State:
- Frames 1–9:
- Strike (10 on first roll): Mark frame complete, move to next frame.
- Spare (10 across two rolls): Mark frame complete after second roll.
- Open Frame (<10 across two rolls): Mark complete after second roll.
- Example: Frame 1 strike → Move to Frame 2; Frame 2 (7+3) → Move to Frame 3.
- Frame 10:
- Strike on first roll: Allow 3 rolls total.
- Spare on first two rolls: Allow 3 rolls.
- Open frame: Complete after 2 rolls.
- Example: 10+10+5 → 3 rolls; 7+3+4 → 3 rolls; 7+2 → 2 rolls.
- Calculate Scores:
- Strike: 10 + next two rolls.
- Example: Frame 1 strike, Frame 2 = 7+3 → Score = 10 + 7 + 3 = 20.
- Spare: 10 + next roll.
- Example: Frame 2 (7+3), Frame 3 Roll 1 = 5 → Score = 10 + 5 = 15.
- Open Frame: Sum of rolls.
- Example: Frame 3 (5+4) → Score = 5 + 4 = 9.
- 10th Frame: Sum all rolls (up to 3).
- Example: 10+10+5 → Score = 25.
- Scores are cumulative (e.g., Frame 2 = Frame 1 + Frame 2).
- Only score frames with enough subsequent rolls (e.g., strike needs 2 more rolls).
- Display Results:
- Update table:
- Rolls: Show pins (e.g., “X” for strike, “/” for spare, “7” for regular).
- Frame Score: Show cumulative score (e.g., Frame 1 = 20, Frame 2 = 35).
- Total Score: Show running total (e.g., 35 after Frame 2).
- Current Frame/Roll: Show “Frame: 3, Roll: 1” or “-” when game completes.
- Example: Frame 1 (strike), Frame 2 (7+3), Frame 3 (5) → Frame 1 = 20, Frame 2 = 35, Total = 35.
- End Game:
- After 10th frame completion, disable buttons and show “-” for frame/roll.
